Pros: Hardware-wise, this is pretty much a 68U with a newer CPU revision, and as such, works with all the same firmwares (Merlin, DD-WRT, OpenWRT), I’m using DD-WRT, since it has better QoS than Merlin in terms of Bufferbloat ratings at the moment, VHT80 5Ghz also works fine when using any custom firmware Cons: Nothing bad so far Overall Review: This’ll hover around 77° due to not having much in the way of ventilation, load or otherwise, and to stay under 50°, I had to elevate the router more than it’s feet currently do, while splicing a case fan to a USB cable to point at it

Replaced a Linksys EA4200 with this router. It was easy to setup and my network was up and running in a little less than 15 minutes. The security features are nice and gives me a confidence that my network is protected. The ability to view and control the router from my cell phone is a nice addition, though I don’t recommend allowing control over the internet. My EA4200 was running DDWRT. I went with the stock ASUSWRT on this router and believe it is a good substitute for DDWRT.

Pros: Wonderful performance with Asus stock firmware, and Merlin and dd-wrt opensouce firmware. A vast performance improvement over my RT-N66u’s. For this reason I have bought 2 of these to replace my RT-N66u’s. The Legendary Asus Rescue mode makes it possible to try different firmware without fear of bricking the router. Cons: Does not currently run My favorites, tomato toastman, shibby or their successor freshtomato. The naming of the router model is very confusing. Model Name: ASUS RT-AC66U B1 Hardware Version: HW B2. Apparently HW B1 would run tomato shibby and toastman firmware for the Asus RT-AC68u, but the HW B2 is trickier by far. Slow to boot compared with my old venerable RT-N66u, but this is forgivable given the wonderful performance. Overall Review: Here is how I got the opensource firmware to run. NB In all cases one must flash for the RT-AC68u !!!!!!!! (not 66u) (1) Merlin: I used RT-AC68U_384.6_0 dated 2018-07-25. (2) dd-wrt: I used asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx 2018-08-22 25,27 MB The 5GHZ led did not light, but the 5GHZ itself was working after the 2GHZ light came on.

Pros: Easy setup. Download the app and you can easily make changes. Cons: Put this unit and the cable modem in a small closet and they do generate some heat. This has not caused problems but we did install a fan. Overall Review: We have had this router in use for almost 2 years and we recommend this unit.

It was a bit tedious at first but after the update it started to work ok. Well it doesn’t serve breakfast but does the help my online gaming..a lot! I had an old RT-N56U what was resetting every half an hour and needed to replace. I’m not a WiFi maniac, so I just need a steady gigabit workhorse with a heavy-duty dual core processor on a fiber line. So far so good 🙂 p.s.I had re-flash the software with Merlin, cause the asus update screwed it up with their latest software. It is actually an AC68U unit inside hardware wise. As for Asus software team it is a BIG thumb down for their lack of features (aka by locking a tons of features) and incompetent solution of software update team by borking the unit.Very disappointing!

Bought this to use as a bridge router in my home. This was refurbished and did not come with a manual and original packaging, but I already had another one just like it and knew how to set it up. The price was fantastic, $40 less than what I spent on the other one in my home. Works like a champ and allows me to hard wire a remote smart TV to my home network and internet.
